Learn MoreChimney ages and weak spots in Sierra Madre
Cottages and Craftsman bungalows sit on the village streets, canyon homes climb higher, and postwar ranches fill in the rest. That is a wide span for a small town, so the check on a bungalow's old brick differs from one for a 1950s stack. Evacuations came with the Santa Anita Fire in 2008, when flames reached the canyon and hills above town. After a burn, heavy rain and debris become a real concern up here. The Sierra Madre Fault also follows the base of these mountains.
Ages on These Streets
Early village cottages and bungalows, then postwar ranch homes and a few apartments, with 8 in 10 homes older than 1980.
What Wears Out First
Old brick joints close to the fault, and caps and crowns on canyon homes exposed to wind and burn-scar rain.
How We Sort It
Fault-side cracking gets first place on the list, with rain-related wear next, and cosmetic items last for later.
