Learn MoreChimney ages and weak spots in San Clemente
Ole Hanson planned this as a Spanish-style seaside village in 1925, and his Casa Romantica still stands above the pier. Very few homes here are prewar, though, and over half came after 1980, so most chimneys are later units with metal parts. Direct ocean frontage brings marine layer and cool summers, and the eastern hills warm and dry out more. Talega and other eastern streets border brushy hills next to Camp Pendleton, so caps count there. The offshore fault zone has no named quake centered here.
Ages on These Streets
A few early Spanish houses, a broad later group, and newer eastern hill homes, with just over half detached.
What Wears Out First
Salt-rusted caps near the shore, and chase parts drying out in the warmer eastern hills.
How We Sort It
Shore and hills get different orders here: rust comes first by the water, and ember protection first near Talega.
