Learn MoreChimney ages and weak spots in Hawthorne
Aviation jobs drove building here from the 1930s through the 1960s, so tract homes and bungalows from those decades are the likely owners of a real chimney. Renters outnumber owners, and detached houses are a small minority of units. Gray marine mornings, heaviest in May and June, keep steel and mortar damp this close to the coast. Since the Newport-Inglewood Fault passes right beside town, older brick gets checked for movement as well as weather.
Ages on These Streets
Close to 7 in 10 homes predate 1980, with bungalows and tracts from the aviation years among many apartments.
What Wears Out First
Steel parts rusted by gray coastal mornings, and joints or crowns on small stacks that went up around the war.
