Learn MoreChimney ages and weak spots in Costa Mesa
Known as Harper until 1920, this place grew up beside an Army air base and became a city in 1953. Postwar tract houses usually have one aging brick stack, and modern rebuilds often use gas, so a visit here begins by finding out which you have. Salt reaches farthest on the Newport Beach side of town, and caps there rust sooner. The epicenter of the 1933 quake lay offshore not far away, so old masonry has a history. Santa Ana winds reach here only occasionally.
Ages on These Streets
Mostly tract homes from around the air base years, plus infill rebuilds, and only about 4 in 10 detached.
What Wears Out First
Steel caps closer to the Newport side, and mortar on tract stacks that have sat through many rainy winters.
How We Sort It
A rebuilt house may have a new gas unit beside an old stack, so each part gets its own notes.
Getting There
