Learn MoreChimney ages and weak spots in Malibu
Some older canyon and beach houses have masonry chimneys, and fire has taken others. About 6 in 10 homes predate 1980, so on a home here the first task is finding out what survived, what was rebuilt, and how the stack was tied in. Spray off the water eats metal caps and fasteners, and strong Santa Anas in the canyons then work on anything loose. Offshore air is only part of it, since a named fault follows this shoreline too.
Ages on These Streets
Colony cottages from the 1920s, canyon homes from many later decades, and about 6 in 10 homes older than 1980.
What Wears Out First
Metal caps and fasteners corroded by salt spray, then masonry in the canyons that may have seen fire or shaking.
How We Sort It
Salt-eaten fasteners holding a cap in place go on the urgent side, since canyon gusts will test them next.
